An ancient bronze griffin head is returned to Greece from New York in a major repatriation move

An ancient bronze griffin head, stolen nearly a century ago, has been returned to the Archaeological Museum of Olympia. The 7th century B.C. artifact was part of a ceremonial cauldron dedicated to Zeus. It was officially handed back by New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art and will now be displayed alongside other artifacts at the museum. Greek Culture Minister Lina Mendoni on Friday hailed the return as significant. The repatriation reflects a broader shift in the museum world toward cultural exchange and returning significant artifacts. Greece has agreed to loan the griffin head back to the Met for future exhibitions.
