A strong earthquake shook Taiwan on Wednesday morning, setting off alarms in the capital, Taipei. No damage was immediately reported. The Central Weather Administration measured the quake at 5.8 magnitude, while the U.S. Geological Survey said it was 5.0. The epicenter was south-southeast of Yilan on the northeast coast. Taiwan is seismically active and in response to past quakes has tightened building codes and carried out educational campaigns for the public on earthquake safety.
